Coty Emeraude, introduced in 1921, is a classic fragrance that has stood the test of time. It’s an oriental scent highlighted by a bouquet of fragrant balsamic, sweet, and woody tones, creating a sensual, warm, and light sensation1. The perfume opens with sharp, aldehydic, and citrusy-resinous notes, which mellow out into a creamy amber/vanilla drydown. It’s described as comforting yet almost haunting, with an otherworldly warmth
The longevity of Emeraude in the market is quite remarkable, especially considering it was one of many fragrances developed by Coty. Unlike some other long-standing perfumes, Emeraude wasn’t revolutionary in terms of its composition or marketing, but it has consistently been pleasing to its wearers. This speaks to the timeless appeal of its scent profile and the quality of the perfume itself.
Emeraude has undergone some reformulations over the years, but it retains the classic fragrance that has been cherished for decades. The original bottles used glass stoppers, which were later replaced by more colorful and decorative bakelite stoppers. Despite these changes, the essence of Emeraude’s fragrance has remained the same, continuing to captivate wearers with its lush and velvety scent.
The Emeraude by Coty could be considered one of the most well-known vintage perfumes in this world, and it also belongs to the 1920s, which some people said 'the period of good perfumes', because there are plenty of high-quality perfumes were created during that time, and Emeraude which launched in 1921 belongs to one of them. However, it is a sad truth that Coty company seems to be going to stop producing modern types of Emeraude cologne. I think this is such a huge loss across the perfume industry. But I could understand that the times are changing, and the 'antique' like Emeraude may disappear in this world one day. Nevertheless, I still feel quite upset about this decision that the Coty company made.
This perfume smells very similar to Shalimar by Guerlain, although Shalimar was launched in 1925 which is 4 years later than Emeraude, there is no doubt that Shalimar is much more famous than Emeraude. They all have similar factors like amber, vanilla, benzoin, and opoponax to create a kind of exotic style. Some people said it smelled like a rose, but when I was checking the ingredients of this perfume, seems like the rose didn't occupy too many parts of its scent. There are plenty of people who said it smells like their grandma, indeed, there are plenty of ladies already wore it as their signature scent since the 1950s or even earlier. If I could have a chance later, I would try the older parfum of Emeraude, maybe this could help me to understand the beauty of this scent better.
